Sinkhole Humor from Kauai

New Year's Day brought torrential rain to the island of Kauai. So much rain fell that that a underground culvert failed near the lobby of the Kauai Marriott Resort. The Honolulu Advertiser reported that, "rushing water eroded the soil under the hotel's road and parking system...One sinkhole near the resort's entrance sucked in a large banyan and several coconut trees. The others ate parked cars."

Lou and Joan Wakley, visiting from Sandy, Utah, discovered that their rental car had disappeared into the sinkhole. According to the Advertiser, Joan was "philosophical." "We always have memorable vacations," she said.

Maybe next year they should stay home!
